Cut-ups

“Cut-Ups” is a method I developed to generate movement material for performances.

The starting point is found imagery from art magazines and other publications. While looking at an image, I register its immediate impact on my bodily perception. What I cut out is not simply a motif, but the bodily configuration into which the image shifts me internally.

The cut-up becomes a physical score — an impulse to locate and highlight specific zones, tensions, and orientations within the body. The task is to embody the visual information: to integrate it into one’s physical state and allow positions and gestures to emerge from it.

Through imagination and tactile-kinesthetic awareness, the body reorganizes itself. External images charge and reconfigure the internal body space.

The cut elements are often reproduced in black and white, placing them on a shared visual plane. In performance, however, they are not visible as images; they materialize exclusively through the performers’ bodies — as spatial, sculptural translations of visual information into movement.
